## Who runs this court

Dead Writing Theory is the Court of Public Prose, and I'm the court reporter. Jack Stovell, if you want the name on the docket. The site is published by Adapt Progress Evolve Limited (UK company number 10047328), the UK studio that also makes the products some pages link to, ScriptGrain included, which is the thing that actually runs the studies.

So what's on trial? The claim that since ChatGPT, writing on the web has been collapsing into one machine voice. It's a nod to the Dead Internet Theory, though we're not affiliated with it or anyone behind it.

Here's the bit people expect me to skip. I don't argue for or against. I investigate, I lay out the evidence on both sides, and then I sit down. No gavel, no closing speech (I did consider a wig, but anyway).

## How cases are made

Every case is a study, and every study starts with a question and a sample, both fixed before anything gets measured. That's the rule. Nobody peeks at the results and then picks the question.

In our own studies, the writing is measured with deterministic code, never a language model. I mean, a machine marking its own homework would be a bit rich.

Every case links to its full method (and our own studies to their published data), so you can check my working, and I'd honestly rather you did. Third-party studies can also be entered as cases, always credited and linked to the original, because good evidence doesn't need to be mine.

One more housekeeping thing: a page's updated date changes only when its content does. No quiet polishing, no fresh-looking timestamps on stale work.

## Contact

Sightings, corrections and evidence are all welcome. The court is always in session, and the reporter is generally at the desk.
